Position Summary

The Aluminum Fitter is responsible for fabricating, laying out, positioning, aligning, and fitting of aluminum components for both new construction and repair projects. The role involves interpreting blueprints and specifications to assemble various aluminum structures accurately and efficiently, while maintaining high standards of safety and quality throughout the process.

Responsibilities

  • Position, align, fit parts to form complete units or subunits, following blueprints and layout specifications, and using jigs, welding torches, and hand tools.
  • Verify conformance of work pieces to specifications, using squares, rulers, and measuring tapes.
  • Tack-weld fitted parts together.
  • Lay out and examine Aluminum stock or work pieces to be processed to ensure that specifications are met.
  • Align and fit parts according to specifications, using jacks, turnbuckles, wedges, drift pins, pry bars, and hammers.
  • Locate and mark work piece bending and cutting lines, allowing for stock thickness, machine and welding shrinkage, and other component specifications.

Overview

A CNC Machine Operator at SSI Manufacturing sets up and runs computer numerical control (CNC) equipment to produce precision components that meet specification, quality, and on-time delivery goals. Work includes loading raw material, inputting or verifying program instructions, monitoring cycles, making offsets/adjustments, and inspecting parts. Operators read blueprints, perform light maintenance, and maintain accurate production/quality logs.

Core Responsibilities

  • Machine setup — Load material, install and adjust tools/workholding, set zeros, verify calibration, and perform test cuts prior to production.
  • Operation & monitoring — Run CNC machines safely; monitor cycle performance; make tool/work offsets, feeds/speeds tweaks, and minor edits as needed to hold spec.
  • Quality control - Read blueprints/GD&T; perform in-process and final inspection using micrometers, calipers, indicators, and gauges; record results.
  • Programming/input — Load programs, verify revisions, and translate drawings into production dimensions at the control; validate with first-article checks.
  • Maintenance & safety – Daily care of machines and work area (coolant, chip management, tool changes, housekeeping) and adherence to company and OSHA safety procedures.

Qualifications

  • Experience: 3+ years operating CNC mills and/or lathes (setups, tool changes, offsets).
  • Blueprints & GD&T: Able to interpret drawings, tolerances, and datums to execute work correctly.
  • Inspection proficiency: Accurate use of micrometers, calipers, indicators, pins/gages; documentation of results.
  • Technical aptitude: Comfortable with CNC controls, basic program verification, tooling selection, and light PM.
  • Math & computer: Solid shop math (fractions/decimals, geometry/trig basics); CAD/CAM familiarity is a plus.
  • Team & reliability: Dependable, safety-minded, collaborative, and consistent in meeting production standards.

Nice-to-Haves (Preferred)

Basic Qualifications

Continental Tide is searching for skilled Marine Electricians II for our Fleet Services in Norfolk, VA. The successful candidate will join our Fleet Services Group performing various ship repairs, modernization and Alteration Installation Team (AIT) projects.

Essential duties & responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Inspecting, repairing, installing, modifying, and maintaining electrical/electronic systems, circuits and equipment.
  • Setting up, checking, and correcting operational and experimental electrical machinery, circuitry, and equipment while adhering to pre-established guidelines and engineering specifications.
  • Performing component and/or system troubleshooting to diagnose the problem and provide most cost-effective recommendation for completing repairs.
  • Perform and/or verify mechanical alignments.
  • Perform on-site field service for system grooms and checkouts, minor repairs and system configuration validation.
  • Inspects and tests electrical systems and equipment to locate and diagnose malfunctions, using visual inspections, testing devices.

The successful candidate will join our Fleet Services Group performing various ship repair, modernization and Alteration Installation Team (AIT) projects. The ideal candidate will have a solid background in structural fitting, blueprint reading, and fabrication work in a shipyard environment. Candidates must be safety-conscious, dependable, and able to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented setting.

Essential Duties & responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Utilize knowledge, skills, and abilities to assemble, modify, lay out, fabricate, repair, and install plates, shapes, and/or pipe as part of a structural assembly in ship alteration and repair.
  • Lay out, position, align, and fit structural metal parts according to blueprints and specifications.
  • Fabricate and assemble metal parts using tools such as welding equipment, torches, grinders, and cutting tools.
  • Interpret ship construction drawings and technical specifications to guide fabrication and installation.
  • Perform tack welding and assist certified welders as needed, ensuring proper alignment and fit-up of structural components per project requirements.
  • Inspect completed assemblies to ensure conformance to specifications and adherence to safety and environmental compliance standards.
  • Employ appropriate trade methods to ensure watertight integrity on metal hulls, including precise fitting and securing of components.
  • Manufacture and install interior and exterior structural items, such as bulkheads, foundations, and framing systems.
  • Repair, remove, and/or replace damaged ship structures and fittings, creating structural welds and fittings as needed.
  • Manufacture and install parts and assemblies from templates, ensuring accuracy and fit.
  • Prepare surfaces for welding, burning, and riveting; lay out holes for drilling using various hand, electric, and pneumatic tools.
  • Measure and verify dimensions using precision instruments such as calipers, micrometers, and tape measures.
  • Coordinate and arrange for the work of multiple trades based on technical work documents, blueprints, specifications, and written or oral instructions.

Experience and Skills:

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred
  • Minimum 5-8 years of marine or industrial ship fitting experience required
  • Proficient in blueprint reading and layout techniques
  • Familiarity with welding, burning, and cutting tools
  • Ability to pass pre-employment physical and background check

Physical Requirements:

  • Exposure to open-air environments, including noisy, hot, and cold conditions.
