Title: Management Associate – Mechanical Maintenance
Location: Mountain Iron, MN
Shift: Open for discussion for development and needs of the business. Typically, first 6-months on days during training, then will move to Manager role and a rotating schedule, typically rotating 12-hour shift with 7-on, 7-off days & nights.
Compensation: $80K-$85K+ base salary + straight O/T (these are salaried, non-exempt positions) + 10-11% target bonus with multipliers that can make bonus over 20% (half paid out quarterly, the balance paid annually) + relocation including temporary lodging, relocation of household goods, and final destination travel. Salary Level & Compensation will be based on experience. Total Annual W2 $100-$130K+

Position Description: The Minnesota Ore Operations of the company includes two facilities that continuously mine and produce the essential raw material for company’s steel plants. These are Union facilities and environments, so coming into the company as a Manager will be both challenging and rewarding. Unless you have steel industry manufacturing experience, you must be capable of moving into an environment where you have the least product knowledge and industry experience yet are the responsible leader who must create team cohesion and produce quality results. These positions are about guiding a group of experienced steel workers along the path to high productivity and excellence, while mastering the overall aspects of the steel business at the front-line supervision level. Due to the nature of the business, the facilities operate 24 hours/day, 7 days/week, 365 days/year. This position?may require work outside of normal hours during plant shutdown & any unplanned outages.
US Steel’s Management Associate Program is the premier entry level program for college graduates to help accelerate their professional development. Management Associates are provided between 12-24 months of training across multiple functional areas with work assignments designed to assist in both personal and skill-set development. The program typically includes rotational assignment(s) within the department and is designed to strengthen leadership capabilities to prepare early professionals for advanced roles within operations or supporting disciplines. Training includes classroom and "hands on" work experiences in Safety, Quality, Communication, Leadership, Teamwork, and Problem Solving. Specific process and equipment training will also be provided. Key aspects of the program include leadership opportunity, project-based roles, job shadowing, career development, and promotion!
Key responsibilities include:
• Apply engineering and/or business principles and problem-solving techniques in a manufacturing environment to ensure maximum operating efficiency while handling the pressure of managing a production crew in a heavily unionized environment.
• Supervise, direct, and coordinate the efforts of experienced technicians to keep the production operations running at maximum efficiency with minimum interruption.
• Consult with other production and maintenance managers, plant engineers, staff professionals, and outside equipment manufacturers; and select, train, and supervise employees.
• Make design modifications to existing equipment to reduce maintenance improve reliability and improve product quality. Performing equipment failure analysis and making appropriate recommendations.
• Review proposed equipment replacement, upgrades, & capital projects with multi-million-dollar budgets.
• Work with consultants and vendors to ensure process requirements, standards and codes are met.
• Engage in maintenance planning functions to minimize downtime; investigate process improvements and participate in facilities upgrades.

Requirements: Candidates must have a H.S. diploma/GED, must have graduated within the last 3-years from an accredited college/university at the time of hire with an engineering degree, preferably in Mechanical Engineering, and must have less than 3 years of professional work experience. Candidates with heavy project management or construction management or business management experiences, or the military in similar roles are preferred. Candidates should have outstanding early-career leadership/potential and be motivated, self-starters who can work in a fast-paced, data-driven environment with good problem-solving skills and an extremely high-level of customer focus and passion for process improvement. This is a very industrial, blue-collar environment that requires a keen eye for safety & being comfortable “rolling your sleeves up” & leading credibly from the floor. Candidates must pass a pre-employment hair follicle drug test as the company has a zero-tolerance policy for drugs and alcohol for safe steelmaking operations.
