Field Service Technician
South Central
US Navy, E-4
Eric Hinistroza was my recruiter, and he answered my questions about what to expect at a hiring conference while working to get me interviews for jobs that would bring me to Houston. The hiring conference was the most valuable part of the process, because it set me up to actually meet and talk to recruiting managers and allowed me to sell myself beyond a paper resume.
I landed a job as a Field Service Technician with National Oilwell Varco, and the technical skills that Navy taught me helped me get my foot into the door. Other parallels with being a tech in the Navy are the need to be accountable for your work and be able to work alone/in teams. However, this job requires a lot more responsibility, because of the independence I now have, and the requirement to represent the company well.
I would not have known much about NOV or this specific job and how well it related to work that I had already done while in the Navy if it weren’t for Orion. Conducting a job hunt is challenging, but going through the hiring conference with Orion was a game-changer in that I was able to interview with a hiring manager and get my foot in the door.
