Veteran Spotlight: Richard McCulley

Richard McCulley is a Systems Specialist with Siemens Building Technologies Division in California's San Francisco Bay Area. McCulley joined Siemens in March 2016, and is the 2000th veteran hired by the company since signing on to the White House's Joining Forces initiative in 2011.

In his current role, McCulley is responsible for configuring building automation systems for Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) technology. This involves not only configuring air handlers and HVAC units, but also troubleshooting to correct and prevent communications issues between the control system and equipment. McCulley uses computers to run tests for system configuration and user interfaces, and then works with the physical equipment to address issues or provide needed updates.

With a family history of military service, McCulley served eight years in the military: four in the Navy as a damage controlman, and four years as a signal support systems specialist with the Army. During his time in the Navy, McCulley served aboard the Aircraft Carrier John C. Stennis, including a nine-month western pacific tour aboard the ship. He transferred into the Army where he became a signal support systems specialist and was deployed to Iraq in 2009-2010.

After completing his military service in 2012, McCulley used his GI Bill benefits to attend technical school as an HVAC technician, and graduated from WyoTech in Sacramento in the fall of 2013. He was hired by a data center as an electrical apprentice in March 2014.

In February 2016, McCulley interviewed with Siemens at an Orion Hiring Conference. Less than a month later, McCulley was on the job with Siemens!

Although McCulley was initially concerned that he did not meet all the technical requirements for the job, Siemens appreciated his experience and is currently providing on-the-job training to make up for any skills gaps. He has spent time with the different teams with which he will interface, and has shadowed a senior team member who will serve as a mentor providing hands-on training. McCulley will begin an accelerated building automation specialist training program this summer, which involves a series of weeklong classes with field work between each class. It will take approximately four months to complete the program. After that, ongoing courses will be offered that are tailored to specific work environments.

Orion is so grateful to have had the opportunity to represent Richard McCulley in his career search and we wish him all the best for a rewarding career with Siemens.

According to Your Peers

"I recently relocated to the D.C. area. I signed up with Orion and was contacted regarding the hiring conference a week after moving. After the initial day of the Hiring Conference, I was scheduled for three positions that I wanted to interview for that Friday. Within three days of the Hiring Conference, Orion had scheduled me for a 2nd interview with Siemens at their campus.

The Hiring Conference is great. I was referred to Orion by two friends who were both hired from these events. The interview prep at the Hiring Conferences are a great tool to have for all interviews after a military career. My Orion recruiter was very direct and gave great advice, he was there to answer any questions I had. Thanks Orion and to all the recruiters!" - Michael Symons, Field Technical Support Specialist

"My recruiter went above and beyond for me. I was able to interview with three companies, of which I was the top choice out of two of them. Now, I currently work on industrial fiber optic laser welders, cutters and cleaners. I had a lot of hands on experience with lasers as a primary part of my MOS in the Marines. However, they were not anywhere near as powerful as the ones I currently work on.

The Marine Corps definitely set me up for success with all the fundamentals on laser theory and operation. Orion went above and beyond for my needs. Every person I was in contact with was nothing but professional, they made you feel like you were in great hands! Orion would be my only recommendation for military professionals looking for a civilian career. Orion- Professional, courteous, and keeps you in the loop for every step along the way. Fantastic organization!" -  Brian Zarzycki, Engineer

"I learned about Orion International through TAPS. My Orion recruiters were great in always calling to see if I was still in the market for a job and took the time to understand what I was looking for. Thanks Orion for always meeting my needs! " - Caitlin Timm, Inplant Ink Technician
