Now is the Time to Hire Veterans - Veteran Unemployment Rate at Near Record Low

The U.S. Department of Labor BLS just released October’s unemployment numbers, and the news is great for our nation’s veterans just in time for Veterans Day. In October, the veteran unemployment rate was 2.9%, as compared to the non-veteran unemployment rate of 3.5%.  Overall unemployment was unchanged at 3.7%.

This near-record low is part of a downward trend. Military.com points out that this is “one of only a few times in nearly two decades that the overall veterans unemployment rate has dipped below 3 percent, following a record-making drop to 2.7 percent last October.”

But what does this mean for employers? It means they will need to work harder to recruit from this talented labor pool. The BLS reports that total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 250,000 in October, particularly in health care, manufacturing, construction, and transportation and warehousing. With increasing hiring needs, hiring managers, especially in the industries the BLS named, need a game plan to fill these positions from a finite group of veteran candidates.
