  • Orion SVP to Address Benefits of Hiring Veterans at CONEXPO-CON/AGG

As the construction industry continues to face a chronic workforce shortage, the large number of service members leaving active duty each year has created a growing talent pool for skilled trades.  David Coe, Senior VP of Talent Programs here at Orion Talent, will be talking about the extraordinary skills and experience veterans bring to the construction industry at CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2020.

Coe’s session on March 12, Constructing Opportunity with Veterans, explains why many of the roles veterans occupy in the military are a natural fit for the construction industry, and offers best practices for employers looking to develop and improve their veteran hiring programs. Topics covered in his presentation include: military demographics and candidate profiles; recognizing transferable skills; attracting, engaging and retaining military talent; specific opportunities for veterans in the construction industry; and a Service Technician program case study.

“We’ve seen countless veterans thrive in a wide variety of construction environments. They are trained to work in challenging environments and are adept at recognizing the relationship between quality, quantity, maintenance and safety,” said Coe. “While veterans are a top tier recruiting target for this industry, only a small percentage of companies are satisfied with their veteran hiring programs. As I explain in my session, employers need to understand the uniqueness of a veteran’s job search situation and how to support them in their transition into the civilian world. In practice, this knowledge goes a long way in helping to establish high quality military candidate pipelines and filling positions faster.”

“Regardless of industry segment and company size, veterans are proving themselves disciplined, adaptable and high-performing employees,” adds Orion Talent CEO, Mike Starich. “Beyond the many sought-after hard skills veterans bring to the workplace, there are also the intangibles – the core soft skills not easily gleaned from a resume. Not only are veterans fast learners, self-disciplined and have the ability to work autonomously, they are well-practiced in thinking on their feet to overcome obstacles in extraordinarily high stakes environments.”

CONEXPO-CON/AGG, North America’s largest construction trade show, is the must-attend event for construction industry professionals. The show features the latest equipment, products, services and technologies for the construction industry, as well as industry-leading education. Held every three years, the event runs from March 10-14, 2020 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

If you will be at CONEXPO-CON/AG, we invite you to attend Coe’s session on March 12 and discover why companies turn to veterans for highly skilled leaders with safety awareness, technical expertise, and project management skills.
