“People want purpose at work.” This is what Orion Talent Sarah Peiker told Mark Feffer during her recent visit to the HCM Technology Report PeopleTech podcast. “And this is especially true for veterans who joined the military with a purpose,” she explains in the episode focused on recruiting and retaining veterans. Throughout the episode, Mark and Sarah discuss how veterans can fill job openings across a variety of industries and bring many strengths to the job market, including their military skills.

When asked about particular industries in which transitioning military veterans excel, Sarah explains that hiring veterans is a great idea regardless of the industry but some are inherently more popular because of their direct correlation to military experience. These include logistics, engineering, sales, manufacturing, construction, and IT. No matter the industry, though, those looking to hire veterans should understand the skills they need to fill, determine what needs to be inherent and what can be trained, and then go about attracting veterans.

Soft skills play an important role in this process. Sarah lists leadership, agility, problem-solving, accountability, dependability, stress tolerance, and adaptability as soft skills with which veterans are gifted that cannot be taught. Hard skills can through reskilling and upskilling. Sarah also provides insight into how to attract these veterans with purpose-driven careers that offer feedback, training, and a robust veteran community.

Overall, Mark and Sarah agree that hiring veterans is a multi-faceted subject that addresses many hot topics in talent acquisition today, including the skills gap, diversity, and building a resilient workforce.
