Transition Advice from Orion Alumni
Did you know that we offer a library of Orion Talent alumni that tell their own story and offer advice for the military to civilian transition process?
Our Orion Talent alumni are military professionals that have successfully transitioned into civilian careers and are willing to share their experiences.
Read about Robert Sickmiller, a US Navy Nuclear Machinist’s Mate who is now a Facility Manager at Bridgestone, or Monique Johnson, a US Air Force Logistics Readiness Officer who is now a Sourcing Program Lead for GE Aviation.
While each person’s transition story is different, there is one thing they all have in common - they found success in a civilian career by using Orion Talent.
It is our hope that these stories from fellow veterans will offer you guidance, advice, and support as you navigate the transition process.
If you are ready to start the transition process, visit our military and transition resources page for tips on resumes, interviews, and more, or register on our site to get started with a Recruiter.
Veterans at Goodyear: Wake-Up and Do It a Little Better than Yesterday
By: Alison Maruca
It’s clear when speaking with Carrie Nelson that she loves her job. As a manager, her mantra for her team members at The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company is: “wake-up and do it a little better than we did it yesterday.” An Army veteran who started a career in logistics, she’s now combining her military service with an industry and an employer who truly allows her to thrive.
When Carrie Nelson left college to join the Army, it was a natural fit. “Choosing to serve was an easy decision,” she says. Just as choosing to serve was an easy choice, selecting to be a unit supply specialist and working in the operations field was also an easy choice. “Operations called to me,” she says. “I loved being a part of a unit that was complex and allowed me to see the big picture.”
Nelson’s service in the Army ultimately inspired her to earn her MBA in supply chain management and helped her land a position with Goodyear. “I loved operations in the Army and it translated so well to what I eventually decided I wanted to do as a civilian,” she says. “It led me to earn my MBA and was a great foot in the door at Goodyear.”
At Goodyear, Nelson serves as a Team Operations Manager for Consumer Replacement Wholesale Distribution. Day-to-day, she works with team members, leading when necessary, to distribute Goodyear, Dunlop and Kelly Tire brands to various customer channels. As a manager, she relies heavily on her Army experience, citing flexibility, communication, and being detail oriented as critical skills she uses throughout the day. Goodyear places a great deal of importance on these skills and others that are unique to the veteran community. “Goodyear values the skills and behaviors that are a fundamental part of military culture,” she says. “They are always actively seeking to hire veterans because of the benefits they bring to the workplace. My military service was a topic of conversation in my hiring process and I’m often brought into conversations and events at the company due to my military experience,” she says.
Nelson touts the veteran employee resource group at the company called the Goodyear Veterans Association. The members of the group include veterans, family members, and supporters who work to increase veteran hires and drive a sense of community among the veteran population.
The association functions as a leadership, philanthropic and social enabling group. Looking at the next generation of service members who are transitioning to civilian life, Nelson encourages them to “be proud!” Think about what you’ve done, she says, and how that can be parlayed into the civilian world. “I loved supply chain logistics, so it was a natural fit for me to use my military experience as leverage to achieve the civilian career I wanted.” Goodyear is a great fit that allows me to lean heavily on my military service while doing a job I absolutely love at a high level, she says.
Meet Orion’s SkillBridge Interns - Tyler Werch
Orion Talent is a proud participant of SkillBridge, a DoD program in which companies offer internships during a service member's last 180 days of Service. During this time, the service member trains and learns from an industry partner while still receiving military compensation and benefits.
You may be eligible to participate in SkillBridge if you have 180 days of service or fewer remaining prior to your date of separation and you have at least 180 continuous days of active service.* A SkillBridge opportunity is an excellent opportunity to enhance your marketability and post-separation career prospects.
This week, we’re highlighting Tyler Werch’s SkillBridge experience here at Orion Talent as an Account Executive in our San Diego, CA office. Tyler is currently a Surface Warfare Officer in the Navy, and decided to apply for a SkillBridge internship to help start his transition earlier and to give him an edge in the current job market.
Tyler applied specifically to Orion Talent due to his Captain’s recommendation. “My Captain told me they [Orion Talent] help veterans out, and everyone he knew that went through them had great success,” Tyler explained.
As an Account Executive SkillBridge intern at Orion Talent, Tyler is responsible for identifying and working closely with America’s leading companies, assisting them in finding the value of hiring military veterans.
The qualities and skills that Tyler has acquired in the military have served him well in his internship. “Communication and learning are the most important for me,” Tyler said. “The ability to adapt to new challenges always helps you in a new environment, and being able to communicate is always important, especially in sales, when you need to build trust or see what value someone is looking for.”
For Tyler, the most rewarding part of his Orion Talent SkillBridge internship has been directly helping veterans like himself. “I can help veterans get a better opportunity they would not have previously had,” he stated.
Tyler’s SkillBridge internship has been a major success, and Orion is proud to have had him join the team as a full-time Account Executive in late November.
We are currently offering the following in-person internships, with potential for employment:

VA REFINANCE LOAN FAQ
What is a VA streamline refinance?
The VA streamline refinance loan is also known as the VA IRRRL. The VA streamline refinance is often a simple loan process because the borrowers are refinancing from one VA mortgage loan to another VA loan. This loan is often also referred to as VA-to-VA Loan. A VA streamline refinance is not available to homeowners who do not currently have a VA mortgage loan. The VA streamline refinance loan does not require that the borrowers occupy the home which is currently financed with a VA mortgage product.
What is a VA IRRRL?
The VA IRRRL loan is also known as the VA refinance or the VA streamline refinance. The acronym IRRL stands for interest rate refinance reduction loan. The VA IRRRL loan or VA streamline refinance is a special type of refinance loan made available by the VA Loan Guaranty program. The VA IRRRL loan is a fixed-rate refinance loan program. This loan is ideal for homeowners who currently have a VA mortgage loan who are looking to lower their monthly interest rate.
Can you refinance a VA loan?
Yes, if you are currently a homeowner whose property is financed via a VA mortgage loan you can apply for a conventional, FHA or VA refinance. Depending on the rate and terms a borrower is seeking, they have the option to review any type of refinance loan to replace their current VA mortgage loan.
How soon can you refinance a VA loan?
Depending on the level of risk associated with a borrower, most lenders would typically require the homeowner have their current VA mortgage loan for a minimum of 12 months prior to applying for a refinance. Payment history is one of the most crucial factors in determining a borrower's risk level for a VA refinance.
Can I refinance my mortgage with a VA loan?
Yes, if you are actively serving military, honorable discharge, veteran or the surviving spouse of any of the previous who is currently the borrower of a VA home loan you may refinance your property with a VA streamline refinance or VA IRRRL loan. The VA streamline refinance or VA IRRRL loan is only available to homeowners who currently have a VA mortgage loan. VA refinance loan products are not available to civilians or the general public.
Can I refinance a conventional loan to a VA loan?
Yes, a borrower who is eligible for VA benefits can refinance from a conventional loan to a VA loan. Although this is not typical, there is no restriction that prevents this. To be eligible for a VA loan a borrower must be actively serving in the U.S. military, have received an honorable discharge, be a veteran or the surviving spouse. If a borrower who currently has a conventional loan opts to refinance with a VA loan the loan process could take longer than average because different documentation will need to be reviewed that was not previously received and underwritten by a VA approved lender.
When to refinance a VA loan?
The decision to refinance a home should not be taken lightly. It is important for a homeowner to evaluate and determine their financial goals. If a homeowner is seeking the opportunity to lower their monthly interest rate or transition from an adjustable rate mortgage loan to a fixed rate program, then a refinance could be a great opportunity. Speaking with an experienced loan originator can help a borrower review their income, assets, and debt to determine if a refinance is the right decision.
How long does it take to refinance a VA loan?
If a VA borrower uses the VA IRRRL loan or VA streamline refinance, the entire process can be completed in 30 to 45 days. Although the VA streamline refinance or VA IRRRL loan does not require income verification, in order for the VA refinance process to move forward, a borrower must have the following qualifications:
- VA Loan eligibility of the borrower must have been used on the property intended for refinance
- Most recent two years of W-2 statements to establish income
- Ability to document current or previous occupancy of the property
- Confirmation of currency on mortgage payments or no more than one late payment in the last 12 months
